Good but not perfect!

In my searching for the perfect breakfast place I visited the Sta Teresa Restaurant today. Located downtown near Bo's Coffee shop. They had a large selection of fresh Filipino food, sandwiches and pasteries. At lunch time it was many locals eating here. They had WiFi with a good speed. I went for a barbeque chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes. I liked the sandwich but they had no caffee latte and the brewed coffee they served was barely acceptable. They had fresh milk for the coffee so that helped a little bit. I can come back for lunch and the sandwiches but sorry to say not for breakfast since the coffee is not good enough for me.

Breakfast, the most important meal of the day?

Breakfast is the first meal of a day, most often eaten in the early morning before undertaking the day's work. Some believe it to be the most important meal of the day. I myself am a believer. I always eat breakfast in the morning and I am convinced that it's the most important meal of the day.

Swedish breakfast (my style)

Anyway depending on where I am in the world, breakfast can consist of different things. At home in Sweden I generally eat bread in combination with hard cheese, egg or ham together with coffee or tea. The basic one is just two slices of dark bread with hard cheese. If I have more time, I make an omelette with some nice filling together with some veggies. A winner is always hard boiled egg sandwich. Dark bread, hard boiled egg with caviar on top. Caviar is a Swedish specialty which actually deserve its own blog post. But in short, it's salted fish eggs you spread on your sandwich.

Two slices of dark bread with hard cheese is always a winner! If I am hungry, I make an omelette with with a nice filling of onions, tomatoes and cheese together with olives and some green veggies. My absolute favourite and also what I am longing for after a while abroad is hard boiled egg sandwich with caviar. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Fried rice with crispy fish heads Filipino breakfast The main ingredience in a Filipino breakfast is the rice. Then you add some protein in shape of fish, egg or meat. The drink? Brewed coffee is not always available not even tea sometimes. So called 3 in 1 (coffee, creamer and sugar) and coffee stick are always available. My choice is the coffee stick, it contains no sugar. Fresh milk is expensive and not that common either, so creamer is the choice. The defintion on creamer is: Non-dairy creamers or coffee whiteners are liquid or granular substances intended to substitute for milk or cream as an additive to coffee, tea, hot chocolate or other beverages. Mmm I guess it contains lot's chemicals... Note! Click on images to see slideshow and captions!  Bangus, is fried milk fish. Salty, crispy and delicious! Beef with onions, rice, egg, water melon, soya, coffee stick, creamer Danggit, dried salted rabbitfish which you dip in spicy vinegar. Hungarian sausage. Longanisa, a skinless sweet and salty sausage. My personally opinion is that it's horrible! Too sweet taste and often poor meat quality. The poor meat quality made this longanisa uneatable Omelette. Sorry to say the bread is often too sweet for my taste. Filipino Beef Tapas is thinly-sliced sirloin cured in calamansi, soy sauce, sugar and minced garlic; served with garlic fried rice and sunny side up. Pork patties, and fried chicken with rice and egg. Yes, it's a really full worthy meal, no need for lunch! Pork tocino, is sweet and salt marinated pork belly. Usually good quality and a nice taste according to my taste buds anyway. After a while with rice every morning, Bo's BLT sandwich with caffe latte is a real life saviour! Another unusual combo as breakfast, Pork Afritada and Pinakbet. Pork Afritada is basically a pork stew with pork meat and veggies. Pinakbet is more interesting, it's made from mixed vegetables steamed in fish or shrimp sauce. Very delicious! Mountain resort with a view

Tierra Alta is located 20 minutes away from Dumaguete City with tricycle. Expect to pay the driver around 150 PHP for the trip. The place gives you an astounding panoramic view of the sea and neighboring islands. Tierra Alta Clubhouse has a hotel and resort and fun amenities like zipline and swimming pool. Entrance fee per person is 50 PHP and for the pool 500 PHP where 200 PHP is consumable. I didn't expect much from the pool at first but when I saw it then I really got cravings for swimming.

A Swiss in the Philippines

When I have been eating rice every day in a couple of weeks I can feel the craving for potato. Ok sure I can go to McDo and eat fries... But no, I mean real potato. I am from Sweden where we eat potato like they eat rice here in the Philippines.
So I decided to try Swiss Zurigo Restaurant. In my mind I was thinking delicious fried potato or why not mashed potato with good tasty Schnitzel.
There were no Filipino guests there, just some foreigners sat and talking by a table. One of them was probably the owner. He seemed to be a nice guy. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel. Fried pork tenderloin with mushroom and bacon gravy served with... yes mashed potato! I got delicious bread with butter when I was waiting for my food. So my expectations were high.

Disappointed

The Filipino staff was friendly and the food came quickly to my table. But sorry to say I was disappointed. Not a single vegetable in sight. The mashed potato was semi-manufactured, potato powder which you mix with boiling water and then stir. A kid can fix that. Real mashed potato is made of fresh boiled potato which you mash with butter and fresh milk and then add spices. It's not that hard to do. The meat was ok. The sauce was a watery mixture of gravy with spongy pieces of bacon. All this come with a relatively high price tag. If at least the mashed potato had been done in the right way, then it had been ok. But now, no I was not satisfied.

Value for money right in town

Bojol Grill is located at the city square of Tagbilaran. They mainly have Filipino dishes on their menu. I ordered their squid adobo in its own ink. May not look so much for the world, but it tasted good so I ate all with a good apetite. In the evenings it's usually crowded here. They also have videoke room for rent. Everything was fine, food, service and cleanliness. I have a special memory though from this place... Last time I was here, a year ago, I accidentally bit hard on a small piece of bone so that one of my teeth cracked. Which resulted in an expensive visit at the dentist back home. Notice, that I don't blame the restaurant, it could have happened everywhere.

A food court with a view

In Galleria Luisa near the city square in Tagbilaran city they have a food court with a beautiful view over the sea. When I am here in the Philippines where fresh squid is available everywhere I really take the opportunity to satisfy my cravings. So this evening I ordered one of my favorites, sizzling squid. Squid is healthy, nutrious and less fat compared to pork meat for example.
Note! Click on images to see slideshow and captions!
The staff was friendly and service minded The view is beautiful night and day Unlimited rice is included in some meals (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Food is fresh and tasty The portions are reasonable in size but if you are really hungry you may order some additional dish. The food is always newly prepared, fresh and tasty. In some meals there are unlimited rice and one glass of ice tea included for free. You can enjoy Wi Fi or the beautiful seaview for free. Note! Click on images to see slideshow and captions! A Korean in Mall of Asia

This branch of Kyochon is a newly opened in the Mall of Asia, ground floor, north wing. It's a Korean style restaurant with chicken as their thing. "Chicken like you've never had before" is their slogan. And yes I can agree, I got a chicken that I never had before.

I ordered the Galbi Chicken Steak with Kimchi Fried Rice. The food was fresh and the chicken was newly grilled. The portion was not huge but still enough even for me allthough I am a big eater.

Pancit Batil Patong, for the meat lovers

If you are in Tuguegarao city you must visit any of the many panciterias available here. The obvious choice would be Eva's Panciteria, one of the most famous in Tuguegarao. Pancit are noodles and this particular dish they serve here is called pancit batil patong.

Big portions with good taste

Just like most panciterias in the city, the kitchen and the cooking of the batil patong is open for the curious to observe upon. Pancit batil patong is pure goodness topped with sautéed ground carabao meat and pork liver adobo and poached egg. The dish comes with the accompanying carabao soup and a saucer of onions with calamansi and chili. Of course you will also have the ubiquitous Tuguegarao-made “Malabon” brand soy sauce. The saying is that batil patong is not batil patong, if not flavored with this unique soy sauce.
There were a lot of students eating here which is an indicator that the place is the real deal. And yes it was, the portions were big, reasonable priced and the taste was good.

Island of Bohol in the Philippines

They are both connected in its way to the island of Bohol in the Philippines. The Chocolate Hills and the Philippine tarsier are two major tourist attractions well worth a visit!

The Chocolate Hills. In Filipino: Mga Tsokolateng Burol

The Chocolate Hills and the giant Arogo

The Chocolate Hills, are a geological formation in the Bohol province. There are at least 1,260 hills spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometres. The romantic version how these hills were formed is the tale of Arogo, a young and very strong giant who fell in love with an ordinary mortal girl called Aloya. After she died, the giant Arogo cried bitterly. His tears then turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.

Tarsius syrichta

The Philippine tarsier

The tarsier, (Tarsius syrichta) is very peculiar small animal. In fact it is one of the smallest known primates, no larger than a adult men's hand. Mostly active at night and it lives on a diet of insects. They have the largest eyes relative to body size of any mammal. Each eyeball is around 16 millimeters in diameter, which is as large as the tarsier’s entire brain!
The majority of tarsier species are now endangered or threatened, and some are designated critically endangered. Threats include habitat destruction and fragmentation, hunting, agricultural pollutants and human disturbance.
Wild tarsiers which are caught and kept in captivity only show around a 50% rate of survival and in many cases they die quickly of overstress by committing “suicide”. So conservation efforts should focus on their wild populations and habitats.
Notice, that the information about which primate which actually is the smallest in the world vary and I leave it to the meticulous reader to find out which it is.
